Acid? Crack? Martian Brain Scrambler?

For as long as the WarioWare games have been out I have wondered what illegal substance the creators use. Are their colorfully insane microgames a result of acid? Shrooms? Pot? It’s been seven years since this game franchise came out, so either the original creators have all OD’d, the drugs are getting better, or…

(If you are unfamiliar with WarioWare take a look at this. It will explain A LOT. The video is in real time. WarioWare Preview)

…Or the Japanese are all aliens. (The lawyers would like to remind me that calling a certain group of beings aliens could be a bad idea. So I’m not saying it, just implying heavily.)

“WarioWare D.I.Y.” gives the player the ability to create their own unique brand of insanity via microgame format. The developers have opened the doors and given us, earthlings the player, an interesting look inside how WarioWare is created; everything from the settings i.e. the theme of the game, to the actions that will take place, and even the music can be customized. The feature uses two styles for making the music, you can hum into the microphone and the DS will convert it to notes, or if humming isn’t your thing, you can write using a music writing program built into the game too. Using a menagerie of noises to make your music; like in “Mario Paint” trumpets, drums, random farm animal sounds (taken from abducted animals no doubt), and a whole bunch of others make it a fairly unique music program to play with.

What really makes this game kick is that you can send your creations to other DS players, or your Wii, and have others send you theirs back, so the potential for new and interesting games is really up to you and your friends. However if you aren’t into creating your own levels there are also around 90 built in games to enjoy as well. So even if you aren’t the builder in the family this game has something for you too.

The game does have some drawbacks; I didn’t enjoy the tutorial much. It was informative, and it definitely helped, but it was pretty boring. And while there are countless cosmetic options in the forge, there is basically only one type of game to make, “tap”. Your challenge is going to culminate in you tapping something. It would have been nice to see movement based games involved too, but they did this to make the game cross compatible with the WiiWare version, and there is a bunch to do in the forge, so you probably won’t mind the “tapping” thing much.

If you like WarioWare then chances are you will like this game. There is enough happening between the built-ins, the forge, and the ability to exchange games between people; that it would be safe to say that you will find it entertaining. Which is exactly what those space jockeys programmers wanted, so enjoy this little gem of insanity! Just don’t sign up for any probes…
