Sometimes, games are terrible. Sometimes they’re awesome. What’s the universally accepted way of telling which a game will be? PTDS, of course. That’s “play the demo, stupid.” There’s nothing like a good DEMOnstration to clue you in to just how good (or bad) a game will be. But it’s not always easy to stay on top of what the latest rage in demos is. So here, let me help you…
Aliens Vs. Predator (Feb 16) – Even people who have been living under a rock know that AsVP drops into stores this week. And if you haven’t already been playing the multiplayer demo, then you must not have anything interesting to talk about. Sure, it suffered initially from a terrible error that made it impossible to play without 7 friends, but now it’s up and kicking.
I have to be honest, though. It’s not the best demo I’ve seen. They warn you as it loads that it’s not as polished as the final game will be. Thank god. Even though it’s fun, it reminds me a lot of the 1999 version of the game. I would hope that in 10 years (and what with all this technological improvement) they are capable of making it way better.
It’s still quite exciting though, as aliens, predators, and humans all run around together killing the shit out of each other. If you are a fan of the original, you will definitely want to try this out. If you aren’t a fan, then it’s time you become one.
Tropico 3 (Feb 16) – This game won’t be for everyone.
For those of us who love the strategy element and secretly want to be dictators, Tropico 3 looks pretty damn cool. First of all, even on the SD TV in my room, this game looks great. The words are a little hard to read, but the level of detail on the map is fantastic.
The demo walks you through how to play, and even though I started getting confused several minutes in, I could tell this game was fun. Yes, there’s a lot to keep track of, but this is a chance to let the administrator and oppressive leader in you shine as you build a regime from the ground up.
Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce (Feb 16) – I’ve never played any game in the Dynasty Warriors series before. I still haven’t technically played DW: Strikeforce, but I did enjoy the demo. If you’re a fan of action RPG’s with lots of customization, you should check this game out.
The controls are a bit confusing at first. However, once you get the hang of the game, everything is smooth sailing. Unless you die a lot, like I do. This game can have up to 4 people playing through at once, which will make it way easier and a lot more fun. Especially if you like anime.
Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing with Banjo Kazooie (Feb 23) – Sega’s answer to Mario Cart, no doubt. Although this game seems easier to get the hang of. The items and racing are all a bit more cartoon-ish as well. We’ll call it Mario Cart Lite.
Nevertheless, if you’re into arcade racing games, and don’t mind feeling like a six-year-old while you play them, I don’t see why you wouldn’t enjoy this. The fact that it’s more accessible to younger audiences makes it less frustrating to people like me who are terrible at Mario Cart. Play it with your kids or young cousins or something. Or with your adult friends that aren’t too insecure to enjoy acting like a kid again.
Talk about a long title, though.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (March 2010) This one is a no brainer. The online multiplayer only demo shows just how good this game will be. In fact, I’m going to stop talking about it and play it some more. I suggest you join me. Seriously, it’s that good.
