Five Quick Momentum Killers

You’re sitting in your game chair, game face on. You’ve completely immersed yourself into the game, but someone’s about to get owned, and that someone is you. Sometimes, defeat is just a part of a game, but other times, it can completely deflate you and make you wish you hadn’t invested so much time into the dang thing. Here’s five moments in a game that I’ll never forget yelling at the TV for.

5. Bags of fun

Some cultures have their warriors claim the hearts or the heads of the enemy. Halo culture has their warriors tag those who have died. The tea bag has become second-nature to many Halo players and has inspired some hilarious media.

4. Get over it!

Earlier this year, I impulsively bought a hunting game for the Wii. The game I picked up was Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts 2010. Not far into the game, I shot a trophy elk from across a cliff and had to claim it. The problem? I had to hurry, and the fastest way over was a tree serving as a bridge. Keep your balance or the hunter falls down – anyone who does this in real life had better fall down. I never played this game again and do not recommend it.

3. Life sure was tough…

I’m sure everyone goes nostalgic when they think Oregon Trail. The game was hunting and traveling, yet remained so thrilling still. Just like life back then, you could lose everything and not have done anything wrong, and sometimes, it was because you had shat yourself to death.

2. Not just the average Joe

When Punch-Out!! Was released for the Wii, I couldn’t help but hum the catchy theme all the way through the game. As I finally managed to knock out Mr. Sandman to become the world champion, I was further excited to defend the belt. Up first to the challenge, Glass Joe, a very familiar foe with some unfamiliar gear and new tactics. What a humbling experience to be outsmarted by a guy who’d been destroyed so many times before.

1. Leon goes Indy

Resident Evil 4 is personally my favorite of the series. It revolutionized and revitalized the series while staying familiar to its roots. One of the new additions to the game featured cutscenes and an action you needed to perform by pressing buttons. The knife fight with Krauser was the best use of this, but the “boulder dash” makes for one of the most deflating deaths I’ve ever experienced.
