Gearing Up for Metal Gear Rising

Ever since it has been announced, there has been much secrecy surrounding the new series of Metal Gear, Metal Gear Rising. MGS4 was the last of the “Solids” and wrapped up the saga of series main character, Solid Snake. As with MGS3, 4 was supposed to be the last one to be directed by Metal Gear creator, Hideo Kojima, but alas that has changed once more, although he has claimed to be acting as producer and only giving limited input. Now, the Metal Gear story continues, but with another familiar face in the main character seat; Raiden.

Now, for those that haven’t gotten eh chance to play MGS4 may remember Raiden from MGS2 and must be thinking “oh great, just what we need, a whiny main character who’s more worried about chatting it up with his girlfriend then killing terrorists! Nice one, Kojima!” Well, let me just say this is not the Raiden we saw in MGS2. This Raiden is all about the battlefield, doesn’t question himself. He is all bad ass, tearing through anything in his way with swords in his hands, his mouth and even his feet. Losing the blue suit for ninja gear now, which from playing MGS4 and seeing all the insane stuff he did (for those that played, remember the end of Act 4), he seems to be a cyborg, kind of like Darth Vader, “more machine than man.”

There isn’t anything solid (sorry for the pun) as far as story nor is there any game play shown yet. The only pic released is the one shown with this article, showing Raiden in his cyborg gear and looking very different then you may remember from MGS2 and even MGS4. There seems to be a bar code on his fore head along with some things that appear to be plus of some sort, maybe for his white blood transfusions and dialysis. The one thing said for game play is that the entire MGS4 engine will be completely redone, from scratch. Instead of the usual “Tactical Espionage Action” tag line, it has been replaced with “Lightning Bolt Action.” This, along with Raiden’s current love for swords and ninja moves, may suggest game play similar to Devil May Cry, letting you cut through levels like a combination of Dante and Eddy Gordo from Tekken. This has me very excited to see the first bit of game play and see what Kojima has in store for us.

The only thing so far rumored for story is that it involves a fourth clone of Big Boss who apparently had hands in the events from MGS1, 2 and 4. If that is the case, how did he stay hidden for this long and what is his connection to Raiden? Only time will tell as I, along with other Metal Gear fanantics, await even the smallest tid bits from Kojima. Hopefully with TGS and E3 rounding the corner, he’ll toss us something to sate our appetite, at least for a day anyway.
