Not Pictured: Even More Lasers
Gratuitous Space Battles caught my attention with the name itself, steeped in the ironic tradition of, You Have To Burn The Rope or I Wanna Be The Guy!! These three games have something else in common: they play more as artistic commentary than fun games.
Loading up this game once or twice is a lot of fun. The music, the jokes, ships with names like “Basic Human Riots”…it’s hilarious to experience. But for a $20 game, Gratuitous Space Battles has incredibly little replay value. It’s a tower defense game with opposing Homeworld-esque fleets – problem is, when you lose, your heavily customized homebuilt ships are all fine. You don’t even fall behind on resources - the computer gives you new resources each turn.
Teaser for Gratuitous Space Battles
The charm of a tower defense game is how your towers/maze itself becomes a character – its gets bigger and better, and you upgrade it, and you worry about it, and hopefully it holds. This game is missing that incredibly key component. However, it’d be unfair to end this review without saying that you should play it at least once. Download the demo here and judge for yourself.
