Heartbreaking Fails-When bad moments happen to good games

Part 3 in Fails bring us to a really great game that had as many thrills, swear words, and great dialogue as it did as many excuses for not owning this game. House of the Dead: Overkill was one of my personal favorites of 2009.

The action was great, despite being criticized for being just an on rails shooter. Shooting mutants, not zombies, was a lot more satisfying compared to the Resident Evil games on the Wii. The writing took advantage of the B-movie vibe Headstrong Games was going for.  So what was the big fail that stuck in my craw? Duel Wield mode.

Unlocked after completing the exciting but pointless Director’s Cut,  you’d assume that Duel Wield mode would allow which ever character you controlled to wield two pistols at once. No-players just got to use an extra remote. Two problems: one, it’s hard to aim at two independent targets if you’re not ambidextrous. Two-players can use an extra remote any damn way, seeing its the only way to complete Director’s Cut without using continues.  It’s a huge fail because this made going through a tough difficulty for such a little payoff. And the extra guns didn’t help.

Fail #1-Uncharted 2

Fail #2-Madworld
