Heartbreaking Fails-When bad moments happen to good games

Yeah-4 rockets seem excessive

2009 is slowly closing and let’s face it-there’s nothing else to buy.  Now it’s time to look back at all the good games this year. The games that are getting awards will get them. That doesn’t mean that these games were perfect. In fact, there were moments in many games that are downright baffling and frustrating. These moments didn’t ruin the entire experience, but they feel like the supermodel you slept with had herpes: it’ll be an incredible experience but it’s there some small nastiness that stings and stays with you forever. So, let’s look the first Herpes recepient: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Uncharted 2. Amazing game. Great setpieces and incredible action. I loved it and so did other fans. But in Chapter 23, there was a point where Nate had to take out two armored gatling gun-a rather simple task, giving the artillery that’s provided to Nate. What made the battle so baffling: even if you aimed a rocket launcher at the armored gunner’s face, it will take at least three rockets.  THREE ROCKETS TO THE DAMN FACE.

In video games, a headshot is the ultimate game stopper.  Regardless of the gun and distance, if a bullet hits skin and flesh, then your day is done.  No armor is strong enough for a rocket to the face. The face!  Four of them! An uncovered face! On Normal! To put that in perspective, think back to the boss battle with Salazar on Professional difficulty in Resident Evil 4.  Once the opening was exposed, a rocket launcher would still end it with one shot. To make it worse, picking up the Gatling Gun didn’t make players super powerful, rendering the gun a fun toy for two minutes. A heartbreaking fail in an extraordinary game.

“2009 is slowly closing and let’s face it-there’s nothing else to buy.” This might be true, but it really depends on whether my parents are buying me a crapload of stuff this xmas.

If they do, it’ll be something that was already released this year.

Yes, this is a phenomenon that I have dubbed GMOI. No game is perfect, but I agree…there is no need for GMOI, “Glaring Moments of Insanity.” People (esp. developers) should pick up and talk about GMOI more often and hope to leave them out of our favorite games…there are, sadly, thousands of more examples;( No more GMOI!!!
