How far would you be prepared to go to save someone you love? Heavy Rain, being developed by Quantic Dream is receiving good acclaim from critics. However, I cannot foresee this game being a huge seller because of the fact that you won’t be shooting everything that moves. On a good note, this game is likely to circulate among fans and possibly set the bar for future gaming genera.
Rather than concentrate on the plot and the imagery, I want to focus on what this game could do for the gaming industry. We know that during game play you have to eat, drink and shit like any normal person as daily routines become part of the greater picture. Subsequently, you can choose to sit on your ass and drink beer all day while the memories or your son turn to drunken delusions and end tragically for the character or you can follow leads and look for the source of the characters misery.
It’s available exclusively for the PlayStation 3 and is set to be released February 11th, 2010. In games like this it’s all about the choices you make. “The question ‘what is good and what is evil’ is the key here, that will be just a matter of viewpoint. I believe heavily in moral choices, I’m going to use them a lot. They’re not about being good or bad, but about finding the right balance.”(David Cage, Director of Heavy Rain)
This game has the possibility of opening interactive doors for players and creators alike. What we find or make beyond those doors becomes mixed with the imagination and knowledge of the designers and the audience. Most industries are subject to rapid changes in what is popular and what will sell, fads if you will. My question is simple, is Heavy Rain an innovative masterpiece? Will it open new doors for the industry or will it fade into the annals of gaming history? What I do know is that it’s irresistible right now and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.
