If you’ve been to the Playstation Store on your PSP in the last couple of weeks, you might have noticed that there’s a new section for Digital Comics. Originally, I was going to write and rant about how silly this new feature is (something along the lines of “oh come on, digital comics is really gonna happen?”), but after digging in just a little bit, I think I might have accidentally become a fan.
After a small download of the Digital Comics program, issues are available to you for $0.99-$1.99 each. They’ve got issues from many different categories, from Spider-Man to Transformers to Army of Two and even comics like Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. If you’re curious but not sure about reading on your PSP like I was, there are free issues to try out available. Issues are added every week, so there’s plenty to see.
The small screen of a PSP seemed restraining at first, but the program uses an “auto-flow” reader to present it to you just as a movie might emphasize it. The picture quality is great, and controls are simple. You can zoom, move to and fro and up and down through pages, and even listen to your own music as you read.
While I still won’t be buying every single issue of every comic, I encourage everyone with a PSP to at least install the reader and check out some free issues, only a few MBs to download. The digital comic book reader is a small feature, but a relatively cheap way to enhance your PSP experience. Rumors have this service possibly added to the PS3 in the near future, so if you’re a fan, keep your eyes open for the big-screen debut.
