Have you ever played a game that makes you feel like a moron?
I’ve had several, but none like my newest exploratory failure, Dwarf Fortress. I made the brilliant decision to volunteer on a message board to take part in a succession game of this, people taking turns playing out a year of a game, saving it, and sending it off to the next user.
I have absolutely no clue what I am doing. When I first loaded this game, I proceeded to stare at the screen for ten minutes like it just blew its nose all over me. As other members of the game speak of their exploits destroying legendary monsters, capturing elephants, and getting their dwarves thoroughly inebriated, I stare.
I stare and stare. Please be careful volunteering to take part in collective gaming efforts, or you’ll be like me watching the days tick away as you struggle to wrap your head around something that is quite clearly above you.
