2k Games released a press release today stating that their upcoming game Mafia II will feature over 50 covers and centerfolds from vintage issues of Playboy magazine. As the game is set in the 1950s (presumably some time after 1953, if Playboy’s not only around, but has a back catalog), copies of the magazine will be a period accurate collectible in the game.
“While most mob-inspired games’ emphasis is solely on action, Mafia II features a deep and compelling narrative that is embellished with a sophisticated, era-evoking atmosphere,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “In partnering with Playboy, we are able to add a unique element of authenticity to the game by using vintage images from the magazine that illustrate the power of Playboy’s influence on the attitudes and culture of that generation.”
To be fair, if we’re dealing with 1950s men with sharp suits, loaded guns, and dubious morals with any accuracy, Playboy is an almost inescapable fixture of that lifestyle. So call it a bold stab at authenticity, though it’s maybe too much to hope that “vintage images” means we’ll get some of Kurtzman and Elder’s Little Annie Fanny comics in the game.
Still, expect this announcement to raise eyebrows, hackles, and etc. when the right parties catch wind of it.

I’ll be playing that game for the authentic vintage boobies. No need to make excuses here.
I will buy this game twice so that I always have a back up.
