Are you happy with your Xbox 360? Can you see yourself playing it without the desire for a newer generation Xbox in 2015? Because according to Microsoft’s David Hufford, senior director of Xbox product management, we won’t be seeing a new Xbox for several years, and quite possibly not even by 2015.
As the Guardian originally reported, Hufford stated in a briefing at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show, “I think it’s important to say that the Xbox 360 is the console of the long future for us. There is no need to launch a new console, because we’re able to give this console new life either with software upgrades or hardware upgrades like Project Natal.” And to make matters worse he stated, “The Xbox 360 was designed for a long life, and I don’t even know if we’re at the midpoint yet.”
What!? As far as I can remember usually after 3-4 years of a console being released there has always been talks of the next generation and looking forward to the future. Even the Playstation 2 with its “10 year life cycle” didn’t stop Sony from giving us the PS3. For Microsoft to delay the development of a new console seems to be cheating their diehard fans always looking forward to the improving consoles and graphics. We already have the Wii for our fun motion sensing games, and we don’t Xbox to sacrifice giving us new graphics in order to add on some gimmick to their system.
Also seeing as I’m currently on my 3rd Xbox 360, and I’m now out of my warranty, is this why Microsoft is really delaying the release of a new console? More of the Xbox owners I know have had to repair their console at least once since buying it, and those few who haven’t usually just bought their consoles. With the terrible hardware flaws in the 360 console, the majority of users might not even have a working console in a couple years, with their warranty expired and now forced to buy a new console, thus garnering a huge amount of sales for Microsoft.
Hopefully Sony and Nintendo will not hold off on their new consoles, and we’ll be hearing about their new systems at E3. But, what do you guys think? Will you be satisfied with playing our current generation of consoles in 2015? Or like me do you demand these companies strive to bring us a better console in the next few years?

Yes, but the constant complaint of gamers every time there is a new console release is generational compatibility. What would a better console be? Better graphics? Hardware/software updates. Better performance? Hardware/software update.
The only thing you gain with a new generation of console is consumer-peen, and that has pushed so many console manufacturers to the edge of financial ruin it’s not surprising that Microsoft is declining to subsidize yet another new generation of console when there is no real reason for it. Microsoft loses money on every single console sold, as does every console manufacturer. Failing hardware is not a market strategy for companies who make most of their money on software sales, as do all console manufacturers.
You forget that with no exception, consoles lag well behind pcs in graphics capability, even for the brand new console releases. The upgrades in graphics are generally done in coding for games, not natively in the console. How many games are coded with the Unreal engine?
Very interesting article! I am on my 3rd 360 as well. I sold my 2nd but my 3rd is still going strong. I can see how the PS3 will last for years to come because of the unused power the system has. I was playing games last night thinking how the graphic shine of the 360 games is wearing off on me and now I am more concerned if the game is fun. I am even getting over achievement points. I still wish to play many games on the system so it will keep me busy for many years to come even if the system dies out. I would say if I were Microsoft I would release my new system in two years. Just because they say they are not planning one does not mean that they are.
I would be really pissed if Microsoft waited untill 2015 to release a new console. Natal wont be as big as a whole new console as they are trying to portray it to be. We all live in this little world called “reality.” And we all know that this motion crap is just a fad. Everyone I know who bought a Wii hasn’t played it in months. Why? Because the games suck and the motion controller is only fun for a few minutes. This same thing will happen with Natal, you have to admit it. The games might not suck if the developers utilize everything well. VERY bad move by Microsoft to wait years to release a new console. Releasing new consoles is a healthy practice in the gaming industry. Dont call me a hater because, if anything, im actually a Microsoft fanboy. I own only a 360, a Zune HD(because iPods are GAY), and only use Windows OS’s on my computers. If Microsoft really wants to value their true customers opinions, then PLEASE give us what we want. Natal wont last. I bet money on that.
i would be very satisfied, going until 2015 would easily give Sony enough time to pull ahead of Microsoft, maybe even Nintendo, the more advanced console shouldnt lose to a fragile piece of crap, or a last gen gimmick
Sony ftw
Awesome article!
They could be bluffing in the hope that Sony will relax their development efforts; then launch the next xbox well ahead of the next playstation. The console that launches first has a huge advantage.
There is not going to be a new Xbox simply because the technology and economy both got stuck. The CPU speeds are still floating around 3 GHz… nothing has changed for several year now… Until technology greatly improves (have a look at the difference between Playstation 1 and Xbox 1 for instance) there is no need to release a new console…
So those of you who just want to buy new hardware every 6 months instead of playing games… go play with the already dead gaming PC nonsence instead of moaning here…
