MMO Review: League of Extraordinary Espers

If you’ve got a decent PC, you’ve probably played at least a few MMO’s. Whether you’re one of the millions who play World of Warcraft religiously, or one of the thousands more who have played one of the hundreds of MMO’s on the market today, chances are you’ve at least played one. One thing I’ve noticed about quite a few MMORPG’s is how repetitive they are. Many of them play like WoW, where the majority of what you do is click on enemies and wait for them to die, maybe hitting a key or two to use a skill. I don’t know about the rest of you, but for me, that gets old mighty quick.

Which is why I prefer MMO’s with a bit more ‘oomph’.

S4 League is a Massively Multiplayer Online Team-Based Third Person Shooter, developed by Pentavision and currently hosted by Alaplaya (in Europe, although an NA version is pending). Similar to other MMOs such as Gunz, S4 has you strapping some guns on and taking down your foes on the way to whatever your goal may be. There are a handful of different gameplay modes in S4, but most will have you teaming up with a number of other players in an effort to take the other team down.

Team Deathmatch should be self explanatory, while Touchdown is similar to Capture-The-Flag in other games, where your team needs to grab the ‘Fumbi’ and rush it to the opponent’s goal. Recently introduced is the Chaser mode, where one player temporarily gains a massive attack and defense boost, and tries to take down the other players before time runs out.

The name ‘S4 League’ comes from the four words which define the game:

  • Stylish: Players can wall-jump, dodge-roll, and perform quite a few stunts while playing, which can help in dodging enemy fire or getting to different places quicker.
  • eSper: Players can choose from a variety of different skills to use while playing, ranging from the power of flight and invisibility to creating brick walls out of nothing, or just giving yourself a boost to your HP.
  • Shooting: A wide variety of weapons is available to players, among them twin submachine guns, chargeable ‘rocket launchers’ and railguns, sentry guns, and a few melee weapons such as swords and bats.
  • Sports: The various modes of play available to you.

An in-game jukebox allows you to play your favorite songs while you play the game, and you can even customize which songs you want for which map. Also, many maps have numerous destructible objects (sometimes even the floor on which you stand), so the box you hide behind to catch your breath may leave you defenseless if you’re careless.

Like many free-to-play MMOs today, S4 League has a ‘Cash Shop’, where players can pay real money for exclusive clothes, more powerful weapons, and various extras. However, in a skill-based game like S4, the player skill matters much more than the power of the weapons he or she carries. While Cash Shop items will give players an advantage, they aren’t necessary to enjoy the game.

In the past, there was quite a bit of latency when playing, but a recent patch has eliminated most of the lag from the game. Also, while there are a few hackers and cheaters, they are usually easily spotted and easily left behind.

All-in-all, S4 League is a very fun MMO, and a breath of fresh air from the various WoW-esque MMOs out there. If this has intrigued you, go grab a friend, download this, and go kick some ass together.

Free you say? I might just have to do some investigating on this one.
