The Last Guardian

The Last Guardian

Our planet is simply covered in islands. We’ve got oodles of them. We have so many, in fact, that I prefer not to count them. This post is not about islands. However, on one of the rather larger islands (which some prefer to call a “Continent”; and still others have lovingly nick-named “Japan”) there lives a video game developer named Fumito Ueda. As a small child, Fumito enjoyed trapping small animals. Speculating on what he may have done with them after that, we’ll perhaps save for a future post.

While this type of behavior has, in the past, had notably negative effects on youth, in Mr. Ueda’s case, it seems to have helped to shape a mad-freaking-genius and omniscient artistic deity (see varied effects of exposure to radiation in humans).

Sorry, Ueda-san, this article isn't just about you

Having brought us such morsels as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, Mr. Ueda’s agenda for the foreseeable future will be to completely dominate your senses in such a way as to numb you to any lesser-offerings of the mundane, organ-grinders which we as gamers must endure. –I nearly forgot to mention: this post is also not about Mr. Ueda. Sorry. –BUT, if you’ll grant me a moment for a happy-dance, it will be my pleasure to tell you about the actual subject of this post: The Last Guardian. This will be the “spiritual successor” to our ‘Exhibit A’ and ‘Exhibit B’ in the argument for video games as an art-form [see Ico and Shadow of the Colossus above]; which is being developed by Mr. Ueda on the large island which some call a continent, which is also nick-named “Japan”.

Apparently unsatisfied with the completely immersive experiences Mr. Ueda has already delivered to us in the form of its predecessors, The Last Guardian will bring all the nuanced, haunting silences you’ve come to love; then help you to combat the loneliness you sympathetically feel for our hero by joining together with your own, colossi-sized, griffon-like creature. Keeping in stride with his previous works, Mr. Ueda will be pushing the envelope with the unrivaled A.I. they are still writing for your giant companion (named “Trico“). While no official release date has been declared, we eagerly look forward to this future release, carefully keeping in mind that each of the previous games released by Mr. Ueda have taken an average of 4 years to see retail shelves and our beloved “Project Trico” (as it was originally code-named) is only on development year 3 (development officially began mid-2007).

The videos and screenshots tell us it’s OK to believe it’s not vaporware, but we’ve been hurt before…

Shadow of the Colossus was one of the coolest games that was ever released. Hopefully this newest installment of Ueda’s games will give us a little more insight to the world he’s creating on our consoles.
