Put Another Xbox 360 Bundle on the Barbie

Australians get a lot of flack for putting shrimps on the barbie, hunting crocodiles, and having an indigenous population of people that are in many ways different from the Europeans that sent their prisoners to the upside-down-under island continent. I’m not sure how much of this is true, because I’ve never been to Australia. All my knowledge of the country comes from American made television and movies. And you know what jackasses we Americans can be about these types of things (meaning other people).

What I do know about Australia is that they will reportedly be getting a special Xbox 360 bundle to be released with Mass Effect 2. Dubbed a “Super Elite” bundle, it comes with the coveted limited-edition 250GB HDD Xbox 360, 2 black wireless controllers, a headset, and the regular Mass Effect 2 game. The casing is plain black, instead of something cool.

You may remember that the 250GB HDD was also released in a bundle with Modern Warfare 2 in America. Except we got sweet-ass custom casing. All this comes at the hefty price of $599 AUD. I could figure out how to translate that into USD, but I’m far too lazy. At any rate, I’m guessing it’s still expensive.

It looks like this deal will be exclusive to Australia, so everywhere else can suck it. Wait, that includes me. Well I guess I can suck it too, then.

Congratulations Australia. You’ve won this round.

$553.18 – doesn’t that work out to be BARELY a deal? I guess if you look at Mass Effect 2 at face value it’s a deal. AND they have Kangaroos. Damn it!

I agree that the deal isn’t that good. I think the important thing to note is that the 250GB HDD is not for sale alone. You can get them from ebay and the like for pretty cheap, but to get them new you have to get the bundle.

Since the Xbox Elite (with 1 controller, the headset and a 120GB HDD) is $300 new, once you add in $50 for another controller, and $60 for the game, you’re a little over $400. I’m guessing the 250GB HDD would sell for at least $200 since the 120GB is $130-150. (add the price of the 120GB to the one that comes with the elite since together they equal 240GB and it works out to be about $550 for the whole thing.)

What I really think would make it worth it is limited-edition case art like what came with modern warfare 2. Lacking that, or the collectors edition of Mass Effect 2, it really isn’t a bargain. The only thing I can think of is that everything is more expensive in Australia.
