Rumored Support For USB Storage On Xbox 360 May Be Proof The Universe Is Just

Early adopters rejoice! If you’re stuck scrounging for space on a 20GB hard drive for your Xbox 360, there may be a pretty convenient solution for you in the near future. Joystiq is reporting that the spring update for Xbox live will include support for USB storage devices as an alternative to those expensive and puny first party Xbox 360 memory units.

The update would allegedly allow USB drives ranging from 1GB to 16GB in size to be installed with a 512MB system partition. Once this partition is installed the remaining storage space on the drive could be used to store everything a hard drive or memory unit can currently store. Given the size limit on the drives and the fact that only two devices can be installed with the partition, you’ll likely want to invest in some 16GB flash drives to ensure you’re getting the most out of the new feature (31GB after partitions).

If true, this rumor also lends credibility to another rumor about the Xbox 360 slim, which was said to be made slimmer in part by removing the memory unit sots.

If you’re like me, and you constantly have to delete Xbox Live Arcade titles from your hard drive immediately after you beat them just to make room for that next Rock Band track pack, then you’re probably as pleased as a Mr. Rogers at a sweater sale. Let’s just hope this isn’t some kind of elaborate practical joke by Sony to have a laugh at all the lowly 20GB Hard drive owners out there.

This seems to be a fairly awesome development. I have this unnatural fear that my account may some day be compromised or disappear, and will no longer be linked to all of the deleted downloads I already purchased. I can only hope that they’d allow the larger external storage devices in the future, though the low prices on those would be no competition for the high-priced storage MS already offers for the 360.

You can get a 120 or 250 GB HD on eBay for pretty cheap. The 250 drives are from the limited edition Xboxes, but man, do they rock!
