Metalocaplypse, the most brutal cartoon in the universe is coming to XBox Live and the PSN. For those that haven’t heard of Metalocalypse, it is a popular series on Adult Swim that is now in it’s third season. It follows the insane antics of Dethklok, the most brutal band in the world and the world’s 21st largest economy. It consists of lead singer Nathan Explosion, guitarists Toki Wartooth and Skwisgaar Skwigelf, bassist William Murderface and Pickles the drummer.
The cartoon is a great satire of metal music and the lives of the members of these bands. Developed by Konami, you play as one of Dethklok’s guards, the Klokateers, at their heavy metal palace, Mordhaus and various concert levels. The Klokateers live to serve their “sires” and do their every bidding. The game play shown has the player just beating the living shit out of random fans that are just dying to get close to Dethklok and their murderous tunes. You can pick up weapons, such as pipes, to beat even more Dethklok into fans’ heads. There are also many other ways to dispose of the regular populace that Dethklok hates, by just plan ripping their heads off, kicking their head in or throwing them into a grinder, which appeared to be at one of the concerts. The list goes on, each area has different environmental weapons you have at your disposal, including the grinder at the concert and a furnace in Mordhaus. After doing all of this to the inocent fans, you can finish the job by taking a nice piss on their face.
Even though the game can sate the appetite of those who enjoy brutal, violent games, such as myself, the game play mechanics leave a little to be desired. The character moves seem to be very sluggish, the standard punch and kicks add little to the joy of annihilating fans and it all makes the game itself get repetitive. It’s a little like how I remember Blood Omen 2 was. I loved the series, but when I actually played it, I was disappointed with the lackluster game play. All it seemed to be was hit, guard, and repeat – slow and repetitive all the way through the game. If it hadn’t been for the story line, I think I may have quit the first hour.
I may give it a try when it comes to download, just because I enjoy the show and music, so maybe the game will give me a little bit of enjoyment with all the piss and violence and being able to explore Mordhaus. If you’re a fan like me, maybe give it a try, but if you’re a die hard action game fan that doesn’t watch the show faithfully, I’d go with Brutal Legend if you haven’t done so already. The game is set to hit the DLC storefronts soon.
